The Z ONE project is the third artist book in a series of brick shaped books that explores ideas about natural and artificial landscapes. How land is divided and zoned for a variety of uses was the primary impetus for this project. The exterior of the book is finished to look like asphalt with reflective yellow text. Opening in accordion folds, the book comes apart in three segments and contains digital images that simultaneously allude to aerial views of land and microscopic views of leaves.
One of the segments of the book was the result of collaborating with landscape architects. For this segment I asked the architects to “zone” an enlarged photograph of a Redbud leaf as if it were land slated for development. I then digitally fused their drawing with the original photograph of the leaf. Using a brush that sampled electronically, from the paths of insects and other leaf blight, I retraced parts of their drawings so it appeared to be fungus on the leaf.
