Pavement uses a scroll format to examine the incidental and intentional marks on pavement. The artist book is a collaboration of chalk notations on pavement by Susan Goethel Campbell and the photographs of Oscar Hoff. Housed in a wooden box with a clear acrylic lid, the scroll opens to a length of 11 feet. Various sized photographs are broadcast singly and in clusters along the length of the scroll. In its closed form, the scroll is wrapped around a wooden dowel with a removable title strip. Text on the backside of the title strip merges the definition of Pavement with the artist’s intent:

1a. A public area or thoroughfare where signs and symbols become part of a larger inventory of things. b. A hard smooth surface that provides a neutral backdrop for seasonal debris. c. A collaboration between Susan Goethel Campbell and Oscar Hoff.
